Felicia James, MSN, RN, CPNP-PC, IBCLC

Felicia is a mother, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and pediatric nurse practitioner with a decade of diverse clinical experience in pediatric medical-surgical, pulmonary, emergency/trauma, primary care, and school-based medicine.

As a new mother to twins, Felicia experienced many challenges that negatively affected her breastfeeding journey such as her diagnosis of insulin-dependent gestational diabetes and undergoing an emergency Cesarean Section.  Subsequently the premature birth of her babies, their extended NICU stay, difficulties with latch, and one infant diagnosed with torticollis were additional challenges.  Despite these difficulties, Felicia was successfully able to achieve her goal and breastfeed her twins their first year of life.

Equipped with the medical knowledge and firsthand mothering experience, Felicia’s mission is to educate and support families in whatever their feeding goals may be.  She has counseled mothers in the hospital setting, outpatient clinic appointments, and lactation support groups.

Felicia obtained her Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing from Marymount University in Arlington, VA. She earned her Masters of Science degree in Nursing, Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner track from Johns Hopkins University.   In her free time, Felicia enjoys spending time with family, community service events with her sorority, arts & crafts, and reading.

Kind Words

I had been struggling for a few weeks with trying to get my daughter to wean…

Within about a month of using the strategies Felicia suggested, my baby had weaned successfully without it being a difficult experience for either of us. Though it was an extremely emotional point for both baby and I, I was happy that we were able to move through the process easily with Felicia's suggestions.

As a first time mom, I felt lost as I attempted to navigate the breastfeeding journey on my own…

The pain was unbearable and I wanted to give up. Felicia's patience coupled with her expertise made me feel supported and validated. Because of Felicia, I regained the confidence and interest to continue breastfeeding , remembering her affirmation that I am exactly what my baby needs.

My breastfeeding journey started rocky ...

My daughter had difficulty latching, making feeding painful and uncomfortable. Now, my baby knows how to latch correctly after meeting with Felicia, and our breastfeeding journey is going great!

Once I left the hospital, I was on my own and had so many issues…

Felicia helped me through some tough times dealing with [breast] infections, poor latching, and producing enough milk. I just felt overwhelmed and defeated. She was very patient and educated me on so much! Gave me so many jewels that made nursing easier. [Felicia] also supported me as I advocated for myself during doctor visits. A lot of healthcare professionals are not educated on breastfeeding and what comes with it, but Felicia was! Soon I’ll be back to work and consulting with her on transitioning to nursing while being a working mom. I would definitely recommend Rooting For You Breastfeeding Counseling to any woman on the breastfeeding journey! I want to say thanks to Felicia! I got through it!
